- do's and do not's, similar to guidelines
- defines boundaries for Christians
- gives us identity, who we are
- mission statement/vision statement/core values
- commandments
- constitution for the new humanity
- how to relate to God, people, yourself
- we titled the entirety of the sermon as "What citizens of Heaven look like on the Earth"

Blessings!

We entitled the sermon "Jesus Redefines the Law". Jesus didn't come to abolish the Law, but He teaches the crowds to give them a more fuller understanding of what the Law should look like, and how we should be hearing it -- to obey it truthfully and genuinely. Falsehood and hypocrisy have no place because God sees our hearts and knows our intentions.
We noticed that there were patterns of literary structures, which helped us to group the sermon into the following chunks:
5:1 Narrative Intro
5:2-12 The Beatitudes
5:13-16 Serving God as a Witness of Christ
5:17-48 Jesus Redefines the Law
6:1-18 Practicing Righteousness in Secret
6:19-34 Seeking the Greater Treasure
7:1-12 Poetic Instructions (E.g. Judge not, that you be not judged)
7:13-27 It's Either Good or Bad
7:28-29 Narrative Ending

Matthew 5:3-16- Good for you!
• Jesus begins his sermon on the mount with encouragement and affirmation
• He speaks blessing and happiness towards people that are suffering the worst in society and considered the lowest
• This is a FIRM blessing for these people
o He does not say that they MAY be salt of the earth or light of the earth but definitively says to his disciples that you ARE the salt and light of the world
Matthew 5:17-20 (Intro to next section)
• Jesus speaks about fulfillment of the law and this is introduction into the next section where He shows us how the law is being fulfilled and completed through these laws that he sets an even higher standard for
Matthew 5: 21-48 – We would call this section “You have heard it was said…”
• Jesus goes through several laws and expands on them setting them to an even higher standard than before
• This is how he is fulfilling the law and not abolishing it….he calls his own disciples to an even higher standard of righteousness than that of the Pharisees
Matthew 6:1-18 – Warning against hypocrisy during acts of righteousness
• Introduction is in 6:1 where he warns against his disciples of doing deeds of righteousness before people
• There is then an elaboration of what these deeds might be and what is the greater righteousness way of doing it
• 6:18b seems to be conclusion to this section where he heeds people to do these deeds in secret so that their Father in heaven may reward them
• This section also helps to remind us that even if we are following the “greater law” that we must remember to not do it to seek the praise of man but rather for our pursuit of God Himself
Matthew 6: 24-7:11- Seeking the right master
• Jesus introduces the idea of two masters in 6:24
o There is a clear division of how we will act if we serve God as our master rather than money
• If we serve God as our master we do not need to be anxious because we know that our great master will provide for us like the lily and birds of the air
• If we truly serve God as our master then we need not be envious of our brother and judgemental of them because we understand that we have problems of greed and sin as well so we look to not judge
• Finally, with the understanding that we are serving the true and right master we can ask see and knock for anything that we need to come before with
Matthew 7:12-27- The lawless vs. the righteous
• Jesus makes a clear division of how we know we are on the path of greater righteousness or whether we are the lawless ones who relax and following the wide path
• There are several contrasts used
o Wide vs narrow
o Sheep vs wolves
o Good fruit vs bad fruit
o Solid ground vs. Sand
• Concludes sermon by indicating that those who follow and practice the teachings that He has spoken upon us are on the narrow, good fruit, solid ground, and sheep path.
